HARLEY L. FREEMAN A.N.A. #2393

Mr. Harley L. Freeman was a devoted and industrious numis- matist for over half a century. He joined the American Numismatic Association in 1923 and was one of only fifteen 50 year members of the A.N.A. at the time of his death last year. He received his gold 50-year membership medal at the 1973 Boston A.N.A. Convention. His membership to the A.N.A. was sponsored by Farren Zerbe. Mr. Freeman was the last living A.N.A. member to have served in the elected capacity of Chairman of the Board, the position to which he was elected at the 1933 A.N.A. Convention. The post was discontinued in 1937.

Mr. Freeman was a native of Cleveland, Ohio, where he was a charter member of the Western Reserve Numismatic Society. He also attended his first A.N.A. Convention in Cleveland in 1924. He then moved to Florida in 1949, where he founded the Daytona Beach Numismatic Club.

Mr. Freeman’s numismatic range of interests was wide and varied over the years. His intesests finally became centralized on Florida numismatics, where he did exhaustive research and writing. His quest for documented research and extensive acquisition of Florida obsolete currency was culminated in 1967 with the publication by the Society of Paper Money Collectors of his book Florida Obsolete Notes and Scrip. This book was the first of the Wismer Revision project to be published and instantly became the standard reference on the subject. It still remains so today.

The loss of Mr. Freeman at the age of 80 was a great loss to the numismatic world. His dedication and enjoyment of the hobby was widely shared with other numisma- tists of all ages for over 50 years, and this spirit is deeply missed by those who knew him.

MAIL BID ONLY SESSION Closes Monday May 16, 1977

Numismatic Literature The Harley L. Freeman Library..............-..- 1008 - 1065

TERMS GOVERNING SALE

This is a public auction sale, held under the auspices of the CENTRAL STATES NUMISMA- TIC SOCIETY, and is conducted by the RARE COIN COMPANY OF AMERICA, INC. with the trade name RARCOA.

The highest bidder shall be the buyer, and if any dispute arises between two or more bidders, the lot in question shall be put up again. In cases where tie bids are received in the mail, the first bid received shall be the one entered. In any event, the Auctioneer’s decision shall be final.

MAIL BIDS WIL BE ACCEPTED FROM THOSE WHO CANNOT ATTEND THE SALE IN PERSON. NO CHARGE OR COMMISSION will be made for executing your bids, but postage or shipping, plus insurance, will be added to the invoice.

When bidding by mail, we suggest that you put on your bid sheet, the absolute maximum price you are willing to pay for each lot. Bids for all lots must be submitted in even dollar amounts, or they will be reduced to the next dollar amount. This DOES NOT MEAN that you will have to pay that amount in order to obtain the lot. It merely enables our agent who bids in your stead, to act for you more intelligently. You will pay only the proper advance over the next highest bidder, and this amount is often less than the top amount on your bid sheet. With the preceeding information, you can understand why we cannot accept “BUY BIDS” or “UNLIMITED” bids. If two collectors sent in “BUY” bids on the same lot, what could the auctioneer do? Lots delivered in the State of Illinois or Wisconsin will be subject to the appropriate Sales Tax. CREDIT CARDS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE for payment of auction lots.

AUCTION SALES ARE STRICTLY FOR CASH, AND MUST BE PAID FOR PROMPTLY IN U.S. FUNDS. Persons unknown to us when bidding by mail must include a deposit of 25% of their bids, or suitable references, or their bids will not be accepted. Any portion of such deposits not used will be refunded after the sale. Bids will not be accepted from minors. We reserve the right to require payment in full before delivery of merchandise. Title remains with RARCOA until all goods are paid for in full.

ANY LOTS PURCHASED BY FLOOR BUYERS MAY NOT BE RETURNED. No lots pur- chased by mail bidders may be returned without written permission. THIS IS NOT AN APPROVAL SALE, and you are expected to keep, and pay for, any lots that you purchase. No lots removed from the original holders may be returned for any reason.

ERRORS IN CATALOGUING WILL BE CORRECTED, but all claims for adjustment must be made in writing within 5 days after receipt of goods. We can, however, assume no respon- sibility for, or correct, any errors as to amounts or lot numbers on bid sheets, therefore: PLEASE RECHECK YOUR BID SHEET BEFOR MAILING!

ALL PHOTOGRAPHS IN THIS CATALOGUE ARE OF THE ACTUAL ITEMS SOLD

Lots may be inspected in our premises from April 25 to May 10, 1977 by

appointment. Lots may be inspected at the Red Carpet Exposition Center beginning May 12, 1977.

FLOOR BIDDERS, PLEASE USE THE SAME BIDDING NUMBERS FOR ALL SESSIONS. PRICES REALIZED will be available for $3.00.

FIRST SESSION FRIDAY MAY 13, 1977 6:00 P.M.

RED CARPET CONVENTION HALL

UNITED STATES TYPE COINS

HALF CENTS

l 1794 Pleasing EXTREMELY FINE with glossy chocolate brown surfaces. Well centered and sharply struck.

2 1804 Plain 4, Stemless. UNCIRCULATED with splashes of original mint color adhering to the surfaces in protected areas about the lettering and devices.

GEM 1804 HALF CENT

3 1804 Crosslet 4, Stemless)s GEM UNCIRCULATED with much original mint luster that is lightly fading to a pleasant golden tan. An area of iridescent blue-gold appears at the top of the obverse. A sharply struck specimen with all details being bold. Would make a handsome addition to any date or type set.

as 1835 A golden-orange GEM UNCIRCULATED example but for a minute area of light corrosion on the edge below the 3 in the date.

HALF CENTS

CHOICE PROOF 1857

5 1857 CHOICE PROOF with sharply squared edges and nice depth to the mirror

surfaces. Deeply toned in shades of gold, blue and lilac. Seldom offered in this grade.

LARGE CENTS

6 1793 S-4. Chain, America. Periods after date and legend. Evenly worn VERY FINE—25 with dark and slightly porous surfaces. Nicely centered and more sharply struck than usually encountered.

7 1793 S-11. Wreath, vine and bars edge. VERY FINE—20 with only some scattered areas of surface roughness to detract from its otherwise pleasing appearance.

8 1793 S-9. Wreath, vine and bars edge. VERY FINE-—30. A light ‘‘X”’ appears

scratched in the right obverse field and with some hardly noticeably lines on the reverse.

9 1794 S-24. A very sharply struck ABOUT UNCIRCULATED-—S0 coin with all details being clear and bold. The hair detail is especially nice. Deeply toned with slightly porous surfaces.

10 1803 S-245. VERY FINE-—35 with two or three light edge nicks.

LARGE CENTS

11 1803 S-258. CHOICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED-S55. The mint luster is fading to an iridescent orange and golden-tan.

7, 1813 S-293. EXTREMELY FINE-—45 with dark surfaces owing, in some part, to the poor quality planchets on which this type of coin was struck. A very acceptable example that is nicely struck.

13 1818 MINT STATE-—60, or slightly better, with faded red in evidence, especially on the obverse.

14 1820 Choice MINT STATE—60+ with iridescent golden-tan toning. Its only real surface flaw is a light scratch between the N and E in ONE of the value. One of the “‘Randall Hoard” coins.

15 1820 Another of the ‘“‘Randall Hoard’? coins. This specimen is a GEM MINT STATE—65 with almost full mint red that is beginning to fade slightly to a pleasing golden-orange. A premium example.

16 1823 Over 2. One of the scarce dates of this type. VERY FINE—20.

VERY RARE 1838 PROOF

si) 1838 N-11. CHOICE PROOF—60+. Sharply struck but for a few of the obverse stars which exhibit weaknesses as made. Virtually immaculate surfaces with a carbon fleck in the reverse field. The obverse exhibits some red turning a medium brown, while the reverse is iridescent olive and blue. Very few specimens known in this grade.

18 1852 GEM MINT STATE-—65 with virtually all the original color intact. More sharply struck than normally encountered for the date.

19 1856 MINT STATE—65 with nice color. There is a light obverse scratch from the coronet to the edge.

FLYING EAGLE AND INDIAN HEAD CENTS

20 1856 One of the Rarest dates in the small cent series. Actually a pattern issue since the weight and metallic changes were not authorized until February 21, 1857, but because of its estimated mintage of between 1,000 and 1,200 pieces, it is generally collected as part of the regular series. Lightly toned BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED.

an 1857 CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with full luster.

22 1857 CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with only a few tiny marks keep- ing it out of the Gem category.

23 1858 Large Letters. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED.

24 1858 Small Letters. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with one obverse nick the only thing preventing a better classification.

25 1859 The only year of this variety with laurel wreath on reverse. ABOUT UNCIR- CULATED with light golden toning.

26 1864 Copper-Nickel. Very nice CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED.

20 1865 Delicately toned CHOICE PROOF. A Scarce year with only an estimated 500 pieces struck in this condition.

MINT STATE OVERDATE VARIETY

28 1869 Over 8. The undertype 8 is plainly visible even with low level magnification. The bottom loop is especially sharp. GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with delicate light golden toning on the obverse and a golden-orange reverse. A really difficult coin to obtain this nice.

29 1903 Lightly toned GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED.

LINCOLN HEAD CENTS 30) a t936 1937, 1938 and 1941, all CHOICE BRILLIANT PROOF. 1939 and 1940,

GEM 1864 SMALL MOTTO

Small Motto. AGEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED specimen with lightly subdued full original mint luster. A beautiful example of this Scarce variety that is sure to satisfy even the most discriminating collector.

Large Motto. Sharply struck PROOF with deep gold and violet iridescent toning.

Lightly toned CHOICE BRILLIANT PROOF with only a couple tiny obverse carbon flecks.

Fully brilliant CHOICE PROOF. Only some very light and minor carbon flecks away from Gem quality. Would make a handsome addition to any date or type set.

ABOUT UNCIRCULATED that has some minor surface marks. Lightly cleaned at some time.

THREE CENT PIECES NICKEL

Over 6. CHOICE BRILLIANT PROOF with some pale golden toning. A Proof-only issue, and a curious one at that because of the overdate. Proof coins are supposed to represent the epitome of the mint’s products, and an obvious error such as this occurs only a handful of times in the entire United States series.

Over 6. A second example, this one being a CHOICE BRILLIANT PROOF with highly frosted lettering and devices and great depth to the mirror fields. Would be called Gem except for a planchet crack (a mint-caused defect) that appears on the reverse.

11

SHIELD NICKELS

38 1867 Rays on reverse. One of only two years in which this variety was struck. Pleasing BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED that exhibits a nice strike and full luster.

VERY RARE PROOF RAYS NICKEL

39 1867 Rays on reverse. CHOICE PROOF, fully brilliant except for a small tarnish streak at the bottom left of the shield. There are a few planchet flakes on the top edge. A VERY RARE issue of which only a small number of Proofs were manufactured (most Proofs of this year are of the No Rays variety). Of those that remain today, no more than a few can compare with the splendid quality of this piece. Worthy of a substantial bid.

40 1872 CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. Very nice.

41 1883 Lustrous ABOUT UNCIRCULATED.

42 1883 Beautiful GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. All the letters in the motto shows signs of recutting.

LIBERTY HEAD NICKELS

43 1883 No Cents on reverse. Only year of this variety. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with some light golden toning.

44 1890 GEM BRILLIANT PROOF.

45 1892 CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with light golden toning.

46 1900 Lightly toned CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED.

47 1901 GEM BRILLIANT PROOF with frosted devices and deeply mirrored surfaces.

48 1904 BRILLIANT PROOF with a small reverse edge nick.

49 1906 GEM BRILLIANT PROOF with pale bluish-golden toning.

50 1909 Attractive lightly toned CHOICE BRILLIANT PROOF.

CHOICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED, only a hint away from Mint State. Lustrous CHOICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED.

GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with light toning.

CHOICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED with light tarnish streaking. There is a surface scratch in the back of the buffalo’s head and a small edge nick.

GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED, a trifle weakly struck in spots. Rather sharply struck BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED.

CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED, somewhat weak in the centers, but overall above average.

A very acceptable CHOICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED specimen.

Lightly toned GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. Very sharply struck and QUITE RARE as such. Should command a healthy premium in this condition.

Lightly toned CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. A sharply struck

example of a date that normally comes quite weak. RARE in this state. There are a few planchet cracks through the top of the head.

A very nicely struck CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED specimen with full horn and good tail definition. FAR ABOVE THE NORM for this date and mint.

One of the RAREST dates to obtain in Mint State. This lightly toned CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED specimen exhibits an above average strike with full luster.

Very sharply struck GEM UNCIRCULATED with full brilliance.

Toned UNCIRCULATED, reverse weakly struck.

BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED, reverse a little softly struck as usual. CHOICE UNCIRCULATED with full luster showing beneath the light golden-gray toning. Very nicely struck except for the top of the buffalo’s forehead. RARE as such.

GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED.

BUFFALO NICKELS

78 1925-D Toned UNCIRCULATED, normal strike. 79 1926 Multi-colored CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. GEM 1926-S

80 1926-S The lowest mintage of the entire series. GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULA- TED with iridescent blue and gold toning. Exceptionally well struck for this date and mint. Should create quite a bit of enthusiasm among knowledge- able collectors of the type. VERY RARE.

81 1927 GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED.

82 1927-S GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with attractive light blue and gold toning. A truly nice example.

83 1928 GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED, a little weak in the centers but above normal for this date.

91 1936 GEM PROOF with light gold and lilac toning. 1938, 1939 and 1941, all CHOICE to GEM BRILLIANT PROOF. (4 pcs.)

THREE CENT PIECES SILVER

92 1852 Variety 1. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with full luster. Some diagonal planchet striations on obverse.

Apparently struck with over-annealed dies which give the surfaces somewhat of a grainy appearance.

VARIETY TWO PIECE IN PROOF

94 1858 Variety 2. BRILLIANT PROOF with pale golden toning and deep mirror surfaces. The obverse striations are the result of over-zealous die polishing and should not be considered detrimental as hairlines might be. ASCARCE type in this condition, and one which is not often encountered.

95 1873 Variety 3. Last year of issue for this type. A BRILLIANT PROOF specimen with some light gold peripheral toning.

HALF DIMES

96 1794 Flowing Hair Type. First year of issue for the denomination. A very sharply struck EXTREMELY FINE specimen with virtually all details being bold. Lightly cleaned at some time and with some pin-point marks visible under a glass.

97 1832 Capped Bust Type. V—8c. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with light toning, especially on the obverse.

98 1837 Liberty Seated Type. No Stars on Obverse. BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with a few miniscule surface marks seen under magnification.

99 1847 GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED, fully struck. A very nice example of the type.

100 1851 CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED.

15

HALF DIMES

1860 TRANSITIONAL HALF DIME WITHOUT A COUNTRY

101 1860 Judd 267. Obverse: the regular design of 1859 (with stars surrounding the seated figure) but dated 1860; Reverse: the regular design of 1860 with ‘‘cereal wreath” surrounding the value HALF DIME. Struck at the time the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA was being transferred from the reverse to the obverse. As such this legend does not appear on the coin. ONLY 100 PIECES STRUCK, according to James Ross Snowden, who was Director of the Mint at the time they were made. Superb GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED, fully lustrous.

UNITED STATES DIMES

102 1796 Draped Bust Type, Small Eagle Reverse. A Proof-like ABOUT UNCIRCU- LATED specimen that possesses an extraordinarily sharp strike. Only do the right obverse stars show any weakness. Just the slightest amount of friction (on the eagle’s breast feathers) away from Mint State, and with some pin-point obverse marks visible under a glass.

SUPERB DRAPED BUST DIME

103 1796 Draped Bust Type, Small Eagle Reverse. A fully lustrous beautiful GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED example. Die break at first star. The coin has a very strong strike, especially on the obverse where each and every star shows full and complete radials and the hair detail is quite bold. The reverse is nearly as nice, with the eagle’s breast feathers being only a trifle weak. The lightly toned surfaces are pristine and show evidence of die clashing. Certainly one of the finest examples of this date that it has ever been our pleasure to offer, and one which will surely make its buyer quite proud to own.

16

1877-CC SPECIMEN STRIKING

114 1877-CC Possibly UNIQUE presentation piece. Undoubtedly a specimen striking which exhibits exceptionally broad rims and high wire edges. An extremely sharp strike easily equal to Proofs of the era, and far above a normal impress- ion from the dies of regular Carson City coinage. The deep mirror surfaces possess a rainbow of deep iridescent toning, and are virtually free from flaws or impairments. To our knowledge, never before listed or offered at public auction. A real FIND for the serious Carson City enthusiast.

SUPERB GEM 1921

118 1921 Sharply struck SUPERB GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. Absolutely FULL and complete reverse band separation, with even the most minute of details being bold. The coin also has full rims, which are not usually seen on this date. This very attractive example has pristine surfaces that possess full original luster with a hint of light toning, and represents a specimen that could not easily be duplicated. It is very possible that we could see a new record price set for the date.

UNITED STATES PATTERNS

| 1836 TWO CENT PATTERN AND | UNIQUE HUB IMPRESSION

Judd 52. Obverse: eagle perched on cloud, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 1836; Reverse: value TWO CENTS sur- rounded by laurel wreath. Plain edge PROOF struck in Billon and “pickled” experimentally at the Mint which gives it a dark color with some silvering apparent in protected areas around the lettering and devices. This was our country’s first proposal for a two cent coin, a denomination that was to become a reality some 28 years later.

Also included in this lot isa UNIFACE HUB TRIAL of the eagle device used for the above pattern. The design is incuse and reversed, and is punched on a type two planchet weighing 95.987 grains. This is well within tolerances for a TWO CENT BLANK (1864-1873)! It is there- fore likely that the piece was made in 1868 when, during the Director- ship of Dr. Henry R. Linderman and under the authority of the Treas- ury Department, impressions were taken from the regular and pattern dies before they were destroyed. To the best of our knowledge, this piece is UNIQUE, and has not before been listed or offered for public sale! It is deeply toned and virtually in MINT condition, with only a hint of rub, apparently from being carried as a pocket piece for a time. This is a unique opportunity for the serious Two Cent enthusiast to add an interesting one-of-a-kind item to his collection. (2 pcs.)

274 1871 Judd 1167. $3 Regular Proof dies trial piece, struck in Copper. Struck as PROOF, although it was cleaned many years age (probably by King Farouk), leaving some spotting. Unpriced in Judd. Rarity 7.

UNITED STATES BUST TYPE HALF DIMES 1829 - 1837

The following group of Bust Type Half Dimes (1829-1837) represents the most complete variety collection to be offered in quite some time. Of the 91 specimens being presented, there are 81 DIFFERENT varieties as listed by Valentine and Breen, plus SIX varieties which were described for the first time in the 1975 Valentine reprint as newly-listed die marriages. Many of these are the DISCOVERY coins.

Better than two-thirds of the specimens offered are Mint State, and a good portion of these are of Choice and Gem quality. This certainly adds immensely to the overall desirability of this set of one of our nation’s smallest and most interesting coins.

The varieties are listed with the following prefixes: V (for Valentine listings); B (for Breen listings); and W (for recent discoveries of S. P. Witham). After each lot are italicized comments relating to that particular piece. In some cases, additional (or lacking) die cracks and other identifiable characteristics are described in some detail, and it is our hope that this additional information may become a part of a future edition of the Valentine reprint.

Following the written portion of this section will be found five plates containing enlarged photographs of each of the 91 specimens in this group. We have tried to be extremely careful both in the photographic and printing processes to show as much detail as possible so that further reference might be assured.

For detailed and complete variety listings, we urge you to refer to the following publications on this subject:

Valentine, D. W., United States Half Dimes (Numismatic Notes and Monographs No. 48), The American Numismatic Society, New York, 1931.

Breen, Walter, United States Half Dimes: A Supplement (The Coin Collector’s Journal No. 160), Wayte Raymond Publications, Montauk, N. Y., 1958.

Valentine, D. W., The United States Half Dimes, Quarterman Publi- cations, Inc., Lawrence, Mass., 1975. A reprint of the Valentine, Breen and Newlin books, with listings of new varieties and addi- tional information.

When used in conjunction with this catalogue, the above publications should provide the ser-

ious Half Dime enthusiast with virtually all the information presently known concerning the Bust Type series.

V—la. ABOUT UNCIRCULATED with some light gray toning.

This coin was probably struck in 1830 or 1831 since the die break (mentioned for the variety as being between the third and fourth stars) has extended from the first through the fifth. Additionally, die rust marks in the field below the E and RIB of E PLURIBUS UNUM are present.

V—2. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED, rather sharply struck.

The coin is the first of only three varieties in the entire 1829-1837 series which has three vertical stripes (gules) on the reverse shield.

V—3. SUPERB GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. This coin is razor-

sharp in strike, and possesses fully Proof-like fields with contrasted frosty

lettering and devices. One of the finest-appearing Half Dimes it has been our

pleasure to handle, and one which will surely see active and spirited bidding. A later die state since the reverse shows evidence of clashing.

V—4. GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED, Proof-like and sharply struck. The F in OF is recut to the left, a fact not mentioned in Valentine.

V—5. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED, boldly struck. Obverse: die of V—1; Reverse: die of V—4, top of second S in STATES is filled.

V—6. GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with some planchet streaking running diagonally from the third star to the eighth and above. Otherwise, this coin shows full luster and a nice strike.

On the reverse, virtually the entire legend and value exhibit what appears to be recutting. y

V—7. Fully lustrous SUPERB GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. A prize acquisition for the Half Dime specialist or type collector.

The third, and final, variety which has three vertical stripes (gules) on the reverse shield.

V—8. A VERY RARE die variety. CHOICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED with somewhat Proof-like fields. The coin exhibits very little actual wear as the weakness in the eagle’s head and neck is due to striking.

V—8. A second example of this RARE variety. BRILLIANT UNCIRCU- LATED with some minor surface contact marks. More sharply struck than Lot 282.

V—9. Lustrous BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED.

A later die state with some clash marks apparent on both obverse and reverse.

V—11. An evenly worn VERY FINE specimen of this RARE variety. Obverse: die of V—2; Reverse: die of V—10.

V—12. CHOICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED, very lightly cleaned at some time, but done so in an expert fashion.

B—13. A VERY RARE die variety. ABOUT UNCIRCULATED with a Proof-like obverse and frosty reverse. Light surface contact marks on the obverse.

Obverse: die of V—2; Reverse: die of V—6.

B—14. Lustrous GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. Sharply struck.

Obverse: die of V—9; Reverse: die of 1830, V—3. At the time Breen’s monograph ea ee he made the comment that only TWO specimens had been seen.

RECENTLY LISTED DIE MARRIAGE

B—15. UNLISTED in either Valentine or Breen. Described for the first time in the 1975 Valentine reprint as a new discovery. GEM BRILLIANT UN- CIRCULATED with pale golden toning draping the surfaces. A couple insignificant hairlines in front of the face are the only exceptions to this coin’s otherwise immaculate surfaces.

Obverse: die of V—la; Reverse: die of 1830, V—3. QUITE RARE.

V—1. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with golden-tan toning, especially about the periphery.

V—2. BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED.

The reverse die of this variety is the same as used for 1829, V—la.

V—3a. BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED, somewhat weakly struck on the obverse.

Apparently, the obverse die was in its later stages at the time this coin was struck since some bulging, in front of the face and chin, is seen. Also, heavy clash marks are visible. This would account for the weakness mentioned.

V—4. Fully lustrous CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. This coin would unhesitatingly be called a Gem were it not for some light surface scratches that appear in the reverse field.

V—Sa. Deeply toned UNCIRCULATED, sharply struck. V—6. GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED.

V—7. CHOICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED with only the slightest traces of wear. Some light golden toning appears on the surfaces.

V—8. Frosty CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED.

An earlier state of the obverse die of V—3a since the heavy clash marks and weaknesses are not apparent.

V—9. GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with some very pale golden toning. A later state of the obverse die with die cracks in the hair and cap, and from the cap to the border near the eighth star.

V—10. EXTREMELY FINE, small edge nick at 12:00 on the obverse. Much luster is apparent.

Obverse: die of V—9; Reverse: die of 1829, V—10. A late state of the reverse die with the cracks mentioned in Valentine having extended from the O in OF through the C in AMERICA. Additional cracks are seen at the eagle’s left wing tip and at the point of the sixth leaf.

300 1830 B—11. UNLISTED in either Valentine or Breen. Described for the first time in the 1975 Valentine reprint as a new discovery. A GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED specimen with some extremely minor obverse pin-point spotting hardly worthy of mention. A sharply struck coin with all of the original mint luster intact.

Obverse: die of V—7; Reverse: die of V-3. RARE.

301 1831 V—la. A simply beautiful GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED example which exhibits very attractive pale golden toning. Superb strike and luster. A later state showing clashed dies.

302 1831 V—2. ABOUT UNCIRCULATED with full luster. Very few signs of circu- lation.

303 1831 V—3. Frosty CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with some very light golden toning. The reverse die is an earlier state of that used to strike the 1829, V—land 1830,

304 1831 V—4. CHOICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED, very nearly of Mint State. There are some very light hairlines to the right of the date.

305 1831 V—5. GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED, sharply struck and with full luster. The surfaces are pristine. An early state of the dies as the reverse does not have the crack running from the edge through the A of STATES and ribbon to eagle’s beak. However, it does show a fine die scratch extending from the tip of the eighth leaf through the wing toward the N in UNITED as listed in Breen.

GEM V—6c, LATE STATE

306 1831 V—6c. GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with frosty surfaces. There are one or two tiny areas of striking weakness, attributable to the advanced stage of the dies.

A late state of the reverse die as it shows additional cracks not listed in Valentine or Breen. The first runs from the edge to the third leaf, to the point of the sixth leaf, and up to the eagle’s right wing tip. The second joins the top arrow shaft with the point of the middle arrow and on to the edge. The third runs from the top of the M in UNUM to the top of the eagle's left wing.

V—7a. CHOICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED. Light golden toning is apparent, especially on the obverse.

The same reverse die that was used for the 1829, V—10 was also used to strike this coin. After sitting idle for two years, it was certainly in a sad state of affairs— the die break over the R in AMERICA is quite pronounced; there are several minor die cracks; and the entire left field of the coin’s reverse is covered with a roughness due to severe die damage.

V—1. Choice BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED, appears to have been lightly cleaned at some time. Very nice overall with lustrous surfaces and sharp strike.

Obverse: small die defect below ear at neck; Reverse: die of 1830, V—1.

V—2a. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with light golden toning. Weakly struck in the centers as is characteristic of these dies and with a few very light surface scratches, none of them deep or serious.

A late state of the dies.

V—3. Frosty CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. The reverse shows

some weaknesses in the eagle’s right wing and body feathers and adjacent

shield stripes. The reverse die used to manufacture this coin saw considerable prior service (1829, V—1; 1830, V—2; 1831, V—2; and 1832, B-10). As such, it was heavily polished, so that the overall relief is quite shallow. Additionally, the berries in the spray have all but disappeared, with a tiny dot being the only remainder of the upper berry. Walter Breen has called this variety an R-7, making it quite RARE and desirable in this condition.

V—5. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with some hints of pale golden toning.

This coin shows several prominent die rust marks in the obverse field around the date and in the area of the twelfth and thirteenth stars. The reverse has some about the ST in STATES as well as below the scroll. Since this die was used in combination with the obverse of 1833, V—4 (the reverse die does not show the rust marks in that variety), it would seem logical to deduce that this coin was struck during that year .

V—6. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. A lustrous specimen with its only fault being a small edge nick on the reverse at the first S in STATES.

V—7. CHOICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED, just a hair’s breadth away from Mint State. The surfaces possess some delicate toning with a small scratch at the chin.

V—8a. Brilliant ABOUT UNCIRCULATED. A very acceptable example of this variety.

In addition to the reverse die defects mentioned in Valentine, the lower part of the Ein AMERICA shows a break, as does the lower part of the F in OF.

V—8c. Deeply toned CHOICE UNCIRCULATED with full brilliance show- ing through. Very attractive halo-like effect.

Additional reverse die defects not mentioned in Valentine: upper part of N in UNITED; lower part of E in AMERICA (see lot 314); top and bottom of F in OF (see lot 314); crack from tip of eagle’s left wing to bottom arrowhead; and faint crack from tip of right wing toward sixth leaf.

V—8c. Brilliant ABOUT UNCIRCULATED which has some pale golden toning. A later state of lot 315 showing additional reverse die defects in the field immedi- ately adjacent to the eagle’s right wing. V—9. Toned UNCIRCULATED.

V—9a. BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with full mint luster.

38

U. S. BUST TYPE HALF DIMES

B—10. CHOICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED, weakly struck in the centers (see comments under lot 310). Breen makes note of the fact that only THREE specimens of this variety had been seen. RARE.

B—11. An EXTREMELY RARE die variety with Breen making the comment that it was UNIQUE at the time his monograph was written. BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with Proof-like fields and contrasting frosted lettering and devices. A fine opportunity for the Half Dime specialist to acquire a prize specimen.

Obverse: die of V—3; Reverse: die of 1831, V—1a. Most likely struck in 1833.

B—12. GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED, sharply struck and with vir- tually immaculate surfaces. Some delicate golden toning enhances the appearance of this RARITY 8 specimen.

Obverse: die of V—1; Reverse: early state of V—8. Breen makes the comment that only TWO examples were seen.

B—13. UNLISTED in either Valentine or Breen. Described for the first

time in the 1975 Valentine reprint as a new discovery. Lustrous EXTRE-

MELY FINE to ABOUT UNCIRCULATED. A VERY RARE variety. Obverse: die of V—5; Reverse: die of V—4. A late reverse die state with a massive die break (cud) covering an area from the second T in STATES to the first A in AMERICA and extending from the edge to the top of the scroll. The correspond- ing weakness in the obverse date area is caused by the large chunk of metal splitting partially away from the reverse die.

GEM DISCOVERY COIN

B—13 (see listing comments under lot 322). Beautiful GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with all the mint luster intact over the nearly flawless surfaces. Another of the many coins in this offering that would greatly excite the serious Half Dime collector. Obverse: die of V—5; Reverse: die of V—4. An earlier reverse die state than exhibited by lot 322.

W—14. UNLISTED in either Valentine or Breen. Described for the first time in the 1975 Valentine reprint as a new discovery. GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with the obverse fields being almost fully Proof-like and the reverse exhibiting frosty luster.

Obverse: die of V—3; Reverse: die of V—5.

V—1. Brilliant ABOUT UNCIRCULATED.

V—2. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with light golden toning. The fields are especially nice. Obverse: die of V—1; Reverse: die of 1832, V—2.

V—2. CHOICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED, nicely struck and with full luster. Same as lot 326 but with an UNLISTED pre-cud die break on the reverse extend- ing from the edge through the I in UNITED, across the top of the scroll, through the A in STATES and to the edge. Another minor break connects the ITED with the STA. Obviously a very late state of this die.

39

U. S. BUST TYPE HALF DIMES

328 1833 V—3. Lustrous ABOUT UNCIRCULATED.

A late state of the reverse die since the breaks mentioned under 1832, V—4 (this die was also used to strike that coin) are present.

329 1833 V—4a. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. Fully Proof-like and with very light golden toning which adds to the attraction of this piece.

The die cracking mentioned in Valentine is actually due to clashing, the results of which are very heavy on both obverse and reverse.

SUPERB GEM VALENTINE 4b

330 1833 V—4b. SUPERB GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED fully Proof-like obverse and reverse except for the frostiness in the areas where the die clashing occurred. Without doubt the FINEST specimen of this variety in existence, and one which will surely see very active competition for owner- ship.

31331 1833 V—5. Delicately toned CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. Sharp strike.

Obverse: die of V—I before it cracked, and with ony Bhai in the field between nose and fourth and fifth stars; Reverse: die of 1832, V

382 1833 V—S5a. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with a couple light nicks. Centers not completely struck up.

Same as V—S5S but with UNLISTED recutting in the legend and the C in the value. Tiny die flaw between the A and M in AMERICA. Obverse die flaw not present.

333 1833 V—6. Frosty CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. The center of the reverse is not fully struck. Obverse: later state of V—4a; Reverse: die of 1832, V—6.

334 1833 V—7. Deeply toned UNCIRCULATED in a gunmetal gray shade. The Min AMERICA is recut.

Bos 1833 W-—8. UNLISTED in either Valentine or Breen. Described for the first time in the 1975 Valentine reprint as a new discovery. EXTREMELY FINE to ABOUT UNCIRCULATED with some obverse surface marks.

Obverse: die of V—7; Reverse: die of 1834, V—1 in an extremely worn and pol- ished state only the upper berry is visible; the arrow shafts appear only as thin lines; some of the arrow feathers have disappeared; and some of the lettering is weak. Struck in 1834.

B57 1834 V—la. GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. Sharply struck and with full luster.

338 1834 V—2. CHOICE UNCIRCULATED with somewhat Proof-like fields that are enhanced by lovely toning in shades of gold and lilac.

Obverse: die rust appears in the hair and drapery near the clasp; Reverse: die of V—I1 (see comments under lot 335 explaining die wear and polish).

339 §=1834 V—3. Frosty CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED.

Obverse: die of V—la with heavy clash marks before face and neck; Reverse: die of 1832, V—7.

340 1834 V—4. Proof-like GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with virtually im- maculate golden-toned surfaces.

GEM 1834 V—Sa

341 1834 V—Sa. GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with deep blue-gray peripheral toning. A sharp specimen, struck with a slightly bulged die. Obverse: die of V—2 (the 3 and 4 both show signs of recutting); Reverse: die of

342 1834 B—6. Toned UNCIRCULATED with Proof-like surfaces and frosted devices. Obverse: die of V—4; Reverse: similar to die of V—4 but with differing charac- teristics.

Obverse: die of V—2; Reverse: die of 1832, V-7 and 1834, V—3. A late reverse die state with polishing having taken its toll in loss of some design elements. Large Date and 5 C.

RARITY 8 1835 B—11

354 1835 B—11. A Rarity 8 variety with only TWO specimens known to Breen at the time his monograph was written (one of them permanently impounded in the Mint Collection). Fully lustrous GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULA- TED which exhibits a strong strike. Virtually immaculate surfaces with a minor mark in the field below the tenth star being its only fault.

360 1836 V—5. CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with Proof-like obverse fields and frosty reverse. There is some striking weakness at the centers.

The reverse shows a large die break covering the right half of the T and ED of UNITED, and a crack runs across the top of the scroll, to the left side of the E in STATES and to the edge. A corresponding weakness to the third and fourth ob- verse stars (caused by the break on reverse) is seen. Large 5 C.

GEM 1837 SMALL SC.

364 1837 V-2. Fully frosty GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED with only a few very light surface contact marks precluding perfection. The center of the reverse not completely struck up owing to the condition of the die. A VERY RARE variety with few pieces known, especially in this state of preservation. Obverse: similar to V—1; Reverse: late state of the die of 1835, V—7. Additional defects include: die chip in upper loop of first S in STATES; die crack from edge through first T in STATES to top of R in PLURIBUS; and upper horizontal of E in STATES almost gone. Apparently the reverse die was heavily polished causing a shallow relief and partial loss of some design elements. SMALL 5 C.

365 1837 V—3a. Brilliant CHOICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED. The obverse exhibits a sharp strike while the reverse is a bit weak in the center.

The reverse die shows two small flaws not mentioned in Valentine or Breen: line in field between tops of first T and A in STA TES; line from tip of eagle’s left wing to second arrow shaft; and fine die crack in field from eagle’s lower beak toward shield/wing junction. Large 5 C.

VERY RARE 1887 PROOF

BRILLIANT PROOF. The lowest mintage of any date $5 Liberty, with ONLY 87 PIECES STRUCK, all in Proof (the only exception is the 1841-0, of which there were 50 struck and reportedly only 2 known, but which has never been offered at public auction). This is the Ullmer specimen, struck in a beautiful deep yellow gold. The coin exhibits a high wire edge and sharp strike, and has some light hairlines visible under a glass. In our opinion, this is one of the most UNDERRATED of all U. S. Gold Coins. As such, this

quality item should see some very spirited bidding. Ex: Ullmer

UNIQUE EAGLE MINING CO. $50 INGOT

Undated $50 Gold Ingot. Produced by the Eagle Mining Company, which is listed

1858

as being from Gilpin County, Colorado. A complete history of this company can be found on page 64 of Stack’s Gibson Sale of Territorial Gold in Nov- ember of 1974. In the Gibson Sale, two odd denomination Gold Assay bars were sold. Stack’s notes that 14 bars are known, giving reference to an ad in the June 20, 1954 ‘“‘Numismatic Scrapbook” wherein Charlie Green offered a $50 gold ingot. This is the exact piece that Mr. Green sold in 1954 to a Chicago collector, in whose collection it has remained until this day. This bar was undoubtedly carefully made to contain exactly $50 worth of gold in weight as stamped: Gold 921 (the 9 overstamped on a 7), 2 ozs, 12 dwt, 17 grs, so it could CIRCULATE AS A COIN! The piece is num- bered # 41 (as illustrated in Mr. Green’s ad). An exceptionally RARE and Extremely Important piece of Private issue gold.

We at RARCOA are proud to be able to offer the entire Harley L. Freeman collection of Florida obsolete notes at public auction. Mr. Freeman, who died in March of 1976, was one of only fifteen 50-year members of the American Numismatic Association. He had devoted much of his time to the study of Florida numismatics, culminated by his authorship of the excel- lently researched and documented book Florida Obsolete Notes and Scrip which was pub- lished by the Society of Paper Money Collectors in 1967 as the first volume of the Wismer Revision project. This book is now the standard work on the subject of Florida obsolete notes, and is still available through the Society of Paper Money Collectors by sending $10.00 to P. O. Box 858, Anderson, S. C. 29622. There will also be copies of the book available at the CSNS Convention.

FLORIDA OBSOLETE NOTES AND SCRIP

We have attempted to list the notes in the catalogue order set forth by Mr. Freeman in his book. The notes are listed alphabetically by town, then by issuer. We have not gone into detailed descriptions of the notes, as they are carefully described in the book. Each note is listed by issuer, denomination, date, and Freeman number. When the note listed is the note that was used to illustrate the book, it is noted after the Freeman number in the description, as “(illustrated).” All rarities used are those of Mr. Freeman’s as follows:

Ct er One reer wy eae eh 1 to 5 known SiMe o Ue ia Cae ee eee eee 5 to 10 known Db ge Paurg 3 eh aie mes he a 10 to 25 known Re”, Me pA ER grat 25 to 50 known Pre rk aie eG aE eee 50 to 100 known ig ak, ike ee Pate ee 100 to 200 known hi carcis se, hale: Bot Noda, rea Over 200 known*

*No Florida notes are this common.

Several of the pieces of currency in the Freeman collection have been photographed, and these appear on five full page plates following lot #971.

PENSACOLA (Escambia County )

UNIQUE COLONIAL NOTE

Fenfacele. eWe >. Promife to Pay the Bearer the fum of _

770. Unknown Issuer 177—. F-1. Scrip note with value to be filled in. Reads “‘Pensa- cola —— 177— I Promise to Pay the Bearer the sum of —— Value re- ceived.”’ Elaborately engraved border. Printed on laid paper of the type used in the 18th Century and found on other colonial notes. Probably paper from H.M. Company of Stationers in London, as a large portion of the crowned Royal arms watermark is visible. Mr. Freeman theorized that this note was probably issued by Panton, Leslie and Co., who were the fiscal agents of the British during their occupation of Florida from 1763 to 1783. The only other known note of the issue is of a different border design and printed in salmon color. It is illustrated in Newman’s Early Paper Money of America. It was sold by Pine Tree Auctions in the Elizabeth Morton Collection of Colonial Coins and Currency (October 18, 1975) as lot #90. The note realized $4850.00 at that time. It is without doubt the highlight of Mr. Freeman’s Collection and will certainly fit into the finest of Colonial or Florida collections. The RARITY, VALUE and IMPORTANCE of this note are impossible to question. (SEE PLATE)
